Bach Flower Remedies for parents and children

Every aspect of human development involves emotional ups and downs. From joy and exuberance, to fear and bewilderment – the way we feel about a situation is often unpredictable. In the case of babies and small children it is often difficult to know what is causing a particular emotion, and why. Pregnancy is fraught with a whole host of highs and lows, which can influence your entire experience of this special time.

As parents we trust that nature has provided us with a keen sense of intuition and foresight when it comes to our children’s needs. Having been through the milestones of life ourselves – infancy to toddler, child to teenager and puberty through to adult (and still growing) – parents and carers draw from their experiences and try to improve on what they see as the errors of those that came before them. But so often we as parents question if we are providing enough, and what we can do to assist our children on their journey through life. Well, there is certainly no prescription, let alone an instruction manual – we can only go with what we have come to believe in, and learn the rest along the way.

Sometimes we need a little help, which is where Bach Flower Remedies come in …

Bach Flower Remedies offer a means to assist with emotional and mental well-being, before imbalances set in permanently and result in diseases and syndromes. It is vitally important to take care of yourself and your children and to recognise that at times you or they may feel overwhelmed with emotion. This is a normal part of the growing process but that doesn’t mean that you should suffer through it.

Your introduction to the world of parenting is the exhilarating but daunting period of pregnancy. Here are some Bach Flower Remedies recommended to help you cope during this time:

Behavioural tendency Recommended Remedy
Afraid of the birth and/or pain, or fear of complications Mimulus

Parenting entails understanding and providing in your child’s needs. When it comes to babies, the idea is to help them overcome imbalances and emotional difficulties before these become part of their personality. This could lead to problems in later life, both in physical and mental health.

The following Bach Flower Remedies are recommended for some behavioural tendencies in babies:

Behavioural tendency Recommended Remedy

Emotions are an essential part of a child’s development. They are also often children’s only way of communicating their needs to you. Sometimes, with growth and development, imbalances occur physically (hormones) and mentally (emotions), which can cause certain feelings to overwhelm your children. Bach Flower Remedies can aid in correcting these.

Here are some examples of the use of Bach Flower Remedies for children:

Behavioural tendency Recommended Remedy
Children hiding their feelings; won’t let parents know about a school bully for example, tend to brood over their secret difficulties White Chestnut
Children that appear outwardly cheerful but hide their suffering Agrimony
Children showing resentment and self-pity Willow

Bach Flower Remedies are wonderfully safe. Nevertheless, the stock remedies are preserved in 27% alcohol, so we recommend that mothers dilute them before using them on themselves while pregnant or breast feeding, or on their children. The dosage is the same for adults and children:

  • Choose the remedies that match the way you (or your child) feel. Try to use no more than seven at a time.
  • Always use two drops at a time of each single remedy, and four drops at a time of Rescue Remedy.
  • For everyday use, add your drops to a glass of water and sip at intervals.
  • For babies, preferably use cooled boiled water. However, milk formula or fruit juice can also be used.
  • If you are a breastfeeding mother, you can take the remedy for your baby, i.e. two drops four times daily.
  • In the case of acute illness, the dosage may be increased to every quarter or half an hour.
